| Established in 877, the City
of Miles City is structured as a Commission/Executive or "Weak Mayor" form
of government under the provisions of the Montana Constitution.
CITY COUNCIL - There are eight
members of the City Council representing four different wards within the
City. Two members of the City Council serve each ward and they are elected
to staggered four-year terms.
MAYOR - The Mayor is elected
at-large to a four-year term.
CITY JUDGE - The City Judge is
elected at-large to a four-year term.
CITY TREASURER - The City Treasurer
is elected at-large to a four-term.
CITY CLERK - The City Clerk is a
full-time employee of the City, appointed every two years by the mayor, with
the consent of the City Council. The Deputy City Clerk is also an employee
of the City appointed by the mayor with the consent of the City Council.
CITY ATTORNEY - The City Attorney is
appointed by the mayor, with the consent of the Council, and supervises the
Deputy City Prosecutor, who primarily manages the criminal caseload of the
City.
BOARDS & COMMISSIONS - There are
several boards & commissions whose members and chairpersons serve at the
pleasure of the mayor. Among those are joint City/County commissions, such
as the Airport Commission, City/County Planning Commission, Solid Waste
Board and others whose rosters are shared with appointees of the County.
CITY DEPARTMENTS - Each City
Department is directed by an employee of the City who serves at the pleasure
of the mayor, with the consent of the City Council. |
